In Memoriam: Brian Vandewalle

In Memoriam: Brian Vandewalle

Dear Friends, Colleagues, and Community Partners,

With heavy hearts, Vandewalle & Associates informs you of the passing of our Founder and CEO, Brian Vandewalle (1948–2026).

A tireless visionary and bold leader, Brian dedicated his life to improving communities across the Midwest. Since founding the firm in 1977, he built Vandewalle & Associates into a trusted partner for hundreds of communities with a reputation for thoughtful, innovative planning and enduring impact. Brian’s reach extended widely across the region, leaving a legacy that will be felt for generations.

Brian’s passion was rooted in reinvestment and revitalization, especially in post-industrial Midwest communities where he saw not just challenges but opportunity. His optimism and belief in the power of planning to create positive change defined both his work and his life.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Brian was a committed community leader who generously contributed to numerous charities and events. He was also a dedicated mentor to generations of employees, many of whom continue his work in communities throughout the country. His guidance, encouragement, and belief in others shaped not only careers, but lives.

A serial entrepreneur, Brian’s vision extended beyond Vandewalle & Associates. He founded and led many additional ventures throughout his career, always driven by a desire to lift and connect local assets and make a meaningful difference. In addition to Vandewalle & Associates, he founded Lakeside Street Coffee House in Madison, WI; founded Death’s Door Spirits; and restored and re-launched the Washington Hotel & Restaurant on Washington Island, Door County, WI as a successful culinary school and retreat.

While we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the extraordinary legacy he leaves behind. His impact lives on through the firm and mission he built, the talent he mentored, the stories and insights he brought to every meeting, and the people he inspired.

As Vandewalle & Associates closes its first 50 years, we remain committed to carrying forward Brian’s vision with a leadership team representing well over 100 years of combined professional experience. We look forward to continuing this work and to building the next chapter together with you.

Our thoughts are with Brian’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Sincerely,
Vandewalle & Associates
