Proven Principles Address the Housing Shortage

MADISON, WISC. For cities and villages in Dane County interested in addressing the housing shortage, the Grandview Commons residential mixed-use neighborhood on Madison’s far east side provides a real-world example of bringing together different types and densities of housing in one neighborhood, at a range of price points.

First established 20 years ago, Grandview Commons is now in its final build-out stages. Grandview Commons includes small alley-loaded single-family homes to townhomes, multi-family, and larger single-family homes. Pocket parks and open space are integrate, allowing residents to gather or participate in outdoor activities. Grandview Commons also includes senior housing.

A recent tour of the neighborhood was led by Vandewalle & Associates’ Principal Brian Munson, and generated so much interest that tour participants asked if they could bring their village board, city council or plan commission for a tour . The answer was yes! For more information, or if your community would be interested in a tour, please reach out to Brian Munson, Principal in charge of Urban Design Initiatives, Neighborhood Design, and Project Entitlement, at Vandewalle Associates, at bmunson@vandewalle.com.
