MUNCIE, INDIANA (excerpts from munciejournal.com) – Construction has begun on White River Lofts, a mixed-use riverfront building and public plaza in Muncie’s White River Canal District. This is one of the identified catalytic projects in the Muncie Central City Redevelopment Plan developed by Vandewalle & Associates. V&A also continues to manage the long-term implementation process.
The project at 400 W Washington Streetwill reactivate this part of the river by bringing 55 residential apartments with high quality finishes and views of the White River, along with commercial uses on the first floor. It also includes a public plaza that will allow greater public river access and other improvements. It represents an approximate $9 million investment in the lofts alone will be paired with a city-funded $1.5 million river walk.
The $9 million development is located in a Federal Opportunity Zone and is designed to spur continued investment in the Canal District and along with attractive housing option for Muncie’s workforce.
As explained in an article in the Muncie Journal, “Major employers such as Ball State University, IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital, Muncie Power Products, and Accutech Systems have been vocal supporters of the project, advocating that quality housing options help them recruit and retain talent.”
The opening date for the White River Lofts is planned for spring of 2021. Leasing inquiries are currently being accepted. For more information, visit whiteriverlofts.com.
