MADISON, WISC. (Video from WKOW News) – Madison’s iconic Oscar Mayer plant opened on the north side of the city in 1919, eventually employing some 4,000 people at its peak in the 1970s. In 2015, parent company Kraft Heinz announced the plant closing, and in 2017 the facility ceased operations–leaving this area of the city that had been defined by the plant’s presence now looking for a new heart, identity, and activity to support the surrounding working-class neighborhoods. Vandewalle & Associates is currently working with the city and neighborhoods to explore a Special Area Plan. Located at the heart of it, the Oscar Mayer plant was bustling with activity for more than 100 years as shown in this 1959 video tour.
