ON SEPTEMBER 23rd Vandewalle & Associates’ Principal Mike Slavney, FAICP; and Assistant Planner Jackie Mich, AICP–along with Matthew Dregne from Stafford Rosenbaum–spoke at the APA-WI Planning Conference at Lawrence University in Appleton. The team presented recommendations for Sign Regulations based on the July 2015 US Supreme Court ruling in Reed v Town of Gilbert, which held that sign rules based on the content of signs are an unconstitutional restriction of free speech. This ruling has the effect of making many provisions of most municipal sign codes unconstitutional, and therefore subject to constitutionally-based lawsuits. Our model post-Reed code has now been adopted by several Wisconsin cities and villages. The annual APA-WI conference focused on “Planning for Prosperity” which explored the link between planning & economic development.
