Racine has secured $200,000 in federal grants to help plan redevelopments along the Root River near downtown, and has interest from out-of-state developers in some sites. The latest grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will pay for planning to clean and redevelop contaminated sites through the RootWorks redevelopment effort. RootWorks focuses on five major sites along the Root River, including Machinery Row, where Iowa developer Financial District Properties plans a 20-acre redevelopment that will create new housing and commercial space.
