Racine public officials and representatives of Vandewalle & Associates hosted a public meeting Thursday Jan 23 to gather input and discuss ides for future revitalization of the Uptown area. Residents and business owners discussed a number of ideas and needs, including adding public gathering spaces, providing incentives for property owners to invest in and keep up their property, and adding a quality grocery store. In an article covering the event by The Journal Times, City Administrator Thomas Friedel is quoted opening the meeting with a description of a postcard from 1932 he found that called Uptown ‘The Heart of Racine’: “In 1932, this is where everything was happening,” he said. “We’d like to get back to that and again make this the heart of Racine.” (Photo by Gregory Shaver, the Journal Times.)
